An AI receptionist can answer the calls your front desk can't get to. Here is how to judge whether one fits your practice and whether it will pay for itself.
The phone is often where a new patient decides whether to book with you. When a call goes to voicemail, many callers don't leave a message. They call the next practice on their list. Missed calls also mean fewer reschedules, slower recall, and patients in pain who can't reach you. Your front desk is busy checking patients in, handling insurance and managing the schedule, so they can't always answer the phone too. An AI receptionist can cover those gaps, but only if it fits how your practice works.
Make sure it connects directly to your system, such as Dentrix, Open Dental or Eaglesoft. It should read your openings and book appointments, not just take messages.
The vendor should sign a Business Associate Agreement and explain how it stores, sends and keeps recordings and patient details.
It should spot urgent calls, follow your instructions and reach your on-call contact.
It should collect insurance, the reason for the visit and contact details, and put them straight into your system.

| Monthly cost | Calls answered | Missed calls recovered | Bookings | Value per booking | Payback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $149 | 312 | 41 | 9 | $250 | ~2 days |
This row is a layout example only, not a real result. Payback = monthly cost ÷ (bookings × value per booking ÷ 30 days). The weekly post also records the setup fee, which is blank on this sample until a real invoice is attached.
These are general-purpose AI receptionist plans, copied from each vendor's public page. Dental-specific vendors often price on request. We'll add them once their pricing is published or measured.

Smith.ai also offers a free tier of 25 calls a month. Frontdesk lists $99 a month, or $79 a month billed annually. Watch for per-minute or per-call overages, and confirm the current terms on the vendor page linked in the table.
For most practices, it handles the overflow instead of replacing anyone. It answers when your team is busy, at lunch or closed.
Often they can, and many vendors recommend telling callers up front. What matters more is whether the call gets resolved.
